The University of Miami’s Pre-College Program offers high schoolers “college experience.”

THE SUMMER SCHOLARS PROGRAM WELCOMED NEARLY 600 STUDENTS TO A CRASH COURSE IN WHAT IT’S LIKE TO ATTEND COLLEGE.

There are not too many places where you can swim with the dolphins one day, participate in shark research the next, then top off your week with a trip to Miami Beach’s fashionable Lincoln Road. Or, if you are more of a sports fan, take in a Marlins game.

All this happens in addition to taking classes with University professors and participating in college prep courses, while living at the University of Miami’s Coral Gables Campus.

That is what nearly 600 high schoolers from around the country signed up for as part of this year’s Summer Scholars Pre-College Program—a part of the Division of Continuing and International Education—which offers a crash course in what it’s like to attend college.

Students participated in shark research with the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science.

As part of their exploration of South Florida’s marine ecosystems, students in the Tropical Marine Biology Program participated in a variety of interactive lectures, lab work, and field study, all focused on the marine environment and marine organisms. A hands-on experience with the Shark Conservation Research Program is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to assist scientists who track and monitor these powerful animals.

“It was very cool and a little intense. The shark we were working on was a 12-foot tiger shark!"

Monica Faraldo offers students forensic investigation and crime scene and intelligence analysis.

“I was surprised that we got to work with so many professionals with expertise in the field.”

Students in the Tropical Marine Biology track enjoy a Dolphin Encounter.

Roger Williams teaches an infectious diseases and public health class.

Students in the Infectious Diseases and Public Health Program get a look at the evidence-based practices, public health policies, and ethical guidelines that officials use to make decisions related to the health and well-being of large populations. They also get up close and personal in the lab with the microscopic world of bacteria and pathogens by swabbing for samples.

“I chose public health because I thought it might be an interesting subject to major in when I go to college. After learning more about it in class, I am confident I will.”
