University of Miami scientists and students displayed innovations and research developments during this year’s 2023 eMerge Americas event, which was held April 20–21 at the Miami Beach Convention Center and drew leaders in business and technology from across the hemisphere.
As a Titanium Sponsor of the event, the University of Miami displayed several research and technological innovations. Attendees listened to an array of keynote speakers, including Academy Award-winning filmmaker Phil Lord and seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady.
Harvey, the Next-Generation Cardiopulmonary Patient Simulator, was developed more than 50 years ago by Michael S. Gordon at the Miller School of Medicine. It has been in use in hundreds of institutions, and in close to 70 countries throughout the world, to train learners in the health field.
Ved Chirayath created MiDAR, the Multispectral Imaging, Detection, and Active Reflectance device that combines FluidCam with high-intensity LED and laser light pulses to map and transmit 3D images of the sea floor at greater detail and depths.
Created by the RAD lab at the School of Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Miller School of Medicine, HealthHub is an interdisciplinary project that offers a safe, reliable method for monitoring, examining, and diagnosing.
HealthHub features an array of biometric sensors developed by Sylvia Daunert, director of the Dr. J.T. Macdonald Biomedical Nanotechnology Institute at the Miller School of Medicine.
This design team thinks of HealthHub as a medical appliance at the center of an ecosystem of wearables and sensing devices designed to monitor the entire living environment.
Two years ago, Joy Jackson, a biomedical engineering major at the University of Miami, was chatting with assistant professor Andrew Dykstra about his research when he mentioned a problem that neuroscience researchers often encounter. He explained that electroencephalograms, or EEGs, that medical professionals and researchers use to measure electrical brain activity—and to identify conditions like epilepsy, sleep disorders, dementia, brain tumors, and Alzheimer’s disease—often are not as effective at reading the brain signals of Black patients, or anyone with thick or textured hair, because it is difficult for the electrodes to attach to the scalp properly. So, she invented a device to solve the problem.
A team of first-year students from the Innovation, Technology, and Design program presented at eMerge about reducing food waste by using vending machines to repurpose one-day-old baked goods.
For a panel at eMerge Americas titled, “The Interaction of Ethical AI and Machine Learning: Social Equity and Good Business,” Ken Goodman, the director of University of Miami Ethics Programs, shared the stage with Angle Bush, founder of Black Women in Artificial Intelligence, and Frost Li, of Social Chat. MacKenzie Sigalos, a technology reporter for CNBC, moderated the conversation.
Erin Ravindran, a senior biomedical engineering student at the University of Miami, was one of the recipients of the 2023 eMerge Americas' Rising Stars award. Ravindran joined a panel discussion with peers from Miami Dade College, Florida International University, Nova Southeastern University, and Florida Atlantic University to share her perspective on technology and its role in the South Florida tech ecosystem.
University of Miami President Julio Frenk was joined by Julian Rodriguez, rector of Universidad Austral in Argentina, and Diego Quiroga, rector of the Universidad de San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador, both university members of the Hemispheric University Consortium, a collaborative initiative spurred in large part by the University of Miami.
Felicia Knaul, director of the University’s Institute for the Advanced Study of the Americas, moderated the panel.
