University of Miami students grabbed their passports this summer to experience life in another country. At least nine programs, coordinated through the Office of Study Abroad and led by University faculty members, traveled to at least nine countries this summer, while others also traveled to attend workshops, seminars, and conferences around the world.
In a course based in London, political science professor Joseph Uscinski and associate professor Michael Touchton explored British political history and policy with 21 students by taking them to some of the most important sites for the government of the United Kingdom.
Undergraduate students from the School of Nursing and Health Studies traveled to Madrid, Spain, in May to learn about the country’s health care system through a cultural exchange program at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria. They were joined by Dr. Diego Deleon, a senior lecturer.
Later in the summer, Johis Ortega, professor of clinical practice and associate dean for hemispheric and global initiatives, traveled with a dozen graduate students who are part of the school’s nurse practitioner program to the Dominican Republic for a weeklong clinical rotation. Read more.
More recently, Deleon and Joseph DeSantis, an associate professor, led a dozen undergraduate, neuroscience, and health science majors on a two-week immersive experience in Peru.
Eighteen lucky Miami Herbert Business School students got a chance to learn about Olympics marketing firsthand in Paris this summer with lecturer Trinidad Callava. Read more.
Ten film students in the School of Communication spent three weeks in Japan immersing themselves in the culture, while also shooting a film and music video in Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Osaka with professor Edmund Talavera, an award-winning cinematographer. Another seven film and photography students from the School of Communication spent just over a month traveling through Prague in the Czech Republic, Germany, and Austria with associate professors Ali Habashi and John Soliday.
In late May, 15 University of Miami Air Force and Army ROTC cadets visited France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, which signaled the end of World War II. The group visited monuments at Normandy, along with Utah Beach and Omaha Beach, through the ROTC Global Scholars Fund. The University’s Air Force ROTC program is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Aerospace Studies. Read more.
A School of Architecture class led by associate professor Frank Martinez and Ana Regalado, associate dean of student development, allowed students to visit and sketch some of the earliest preserved buildings in Greece, both in Athens and Mykonos. They also toured many of the greatest architectural feats in Italy, including stops in Venice, Florence, and Rome. Read more.
About 30 students from the Frost School of Music attended the Patti and Allan Herbert Frost School of Music Program at Salzburg, a four- to five-week program in Austria where they honed their singing skills with music lessons and master classes while also learning German and attending concerts in the region. They were joined by Robynne Redmon, associate professor of vocal performance, acclaimed mezzo-soprano, and director of the Salzburg program. Read more.
In late June, current students and recent graduates of the Frost School of Music spent a week in London, collaborating with their counterparts from the Royal Academy and playing, performing, and recording previously lost music of British jazz icon Kenny Wheeler at the fabled Abbey Road Studios, home to the Beatles and countless other musical legends. The trip was organized and led by John Daversa, chair of studio music and jazz at the Frost School. Read more.
